Japanese Metal Gilding

Interested in adding gold or silver shine into your artwork or home décor? Learn a traditional Japanese gilding technique; how to apply metal leaf. Also make your own bamboo metal leaf sifter to make sparkling metal flakes. Metal leaf can be applied on variety of things, such as wood, ceramic, plastic, metal and so much more! Bring artwork or other items for metal leafing. Class price includes studio fee of $45. After 1st class, these fees are non-refundable.

Japanese Metal Inlay and Patinas

Date : April 1-2, 2017, Sat & Sun 10am - 5pm

This class offers a unique opportunity to delve into the art of Japanese inlay and patinas. Explore the process of Japanese line and dot inlay and gain skills using various Japanese alloys. Great for the beginner and experienced maker alike, this class covers the basics, but also offers the opportunity for skill refinement for more advanced students. Then, Momoko will teach you to formulate your own Japanese patinas for coloring metal by mixing chemicals from scratch. By applying patina to your inlay piece you will be able to highlight out the contrast of the different colored metals.
Patina techniques include Niiro(Nee-e-ro), a traditional Japanese patination process for copper alloys such as Shibuichi(copper & silver) and Shakudo(copper & gold), Rokusho (blue/green) patina, Heiro (red copper finish) and black finish on brass.

Nunome Zogan (cloth texture overlay) is one of the traditional Japanese inlay techniques.

This style is overlaid silver or gold foil onto various metal such as brass, Shibuichi, Shakudo, and more. This class will be a great step to continue your inlay skills after learning line inlay to combine those techniques to expand your creations. Great for the beginner and experienced maker alike, this class covers the basics, but also offers the opportunity for skill refinement for more advanced students.

Traditional Japanese patina will also be covered.
